- Before engaging a proofreader, your work should have been
- Self-edited (multiple times). That’s free.
- Developmental edited (often done by beta readers). Usually, that is also free.
- Copy-edited and/or line-edited (These are the costliest edits but should make your book marketable and pleasing for readers.
- The proofreader is to ensure the copy is pristine—it is ready to publish. (Speaking for myself, it is somewhat less than half the cost of an editor because the work’s easier.)
